For people who are visiting the UK for a week or two, the best thing about hiring a car in London is that you can really get to see a lot of the country. A 5 or 7 day road trip reveals a completely different side to the UK. The following places are suggestions for visits and do not include places to stay: working that out is half the fun of planning your road trip! Instead, these are some of the best parts of southern England.
Starting from London, take the one and a half hour drive to Winchester to see the college and city mill in the historic centre. From there, Salisbury is another half hour drive away, and its main attractions include the magnificent cathedral. From here, the awe inspiring Stonehenge is just another 20 minutes drive. Perhaps you’ll stop here for summer solstice.
Drive towards Avebury, an entire village surrounded by a stone circle. Built and altered over many centuries, it appears as a huge circular bank and ditch, enclosing an area of 28.5 acres. History is about as it’s then on to Bath, famous for its Roman remains, especially the baths themselves. From there, head northwards, where other stops should include Stratford Upon Avon, the birthplace of William Shakespeare, Warwick for its castle, Blenheim Palace, a monumental country house, the university city of Oxford with its outstanding architecture, before returning to London.
