Crossing Australia with the Indian Pacific

Crossing Australia with the Indian Pacific

Highlights

  • Indian Pacific
  • Barossa Valley
  • Blue Mountains

Cross the Australian continent by train on a journey that opens with a flight from Melbourne to Perth and closes with one from Sydney back to Melbourne, while the legendary Indian Pacific handles the coast-to-coast crossing in between. Departing East Perth Station, the route threads through the Avon Valley, the goldfields town of Kalgoorlie, the vast Nullarbor Plain, South Australia and New South Wales, eventually climbing into the Blue Mountains before rolling into Sydney Central Station.

What unfolds off the train is just as much a part of the experience as the ride itself. Kalgoorlie brings a visit to the enormous Super Pit gold mine, while Broken Hill offers a choice of experiences — the Miners' Memorial, the Daydream Mine, the Pro Hart Gallery, or a bush dining experience with Chef Lee Cecchin out in the Living Desert State Park. Later, the Blue Mountains provide their own options, whether that's exploring Scenic World or indulging in high tea at the historic Hydro Majestic Hotel. A particular highlight comes at Seppeltsfield Estate in the Barossa Valley, where an evening cellar dinner crafted by Executive Chef Owen Andrews is paired with a dramatic 'Firing of the Barrel' display — and Platinum travelers are treated to a taste of tawny aged a full century.

By the time you step off in Sydney, you'll have traversed Australia from the Indian Ocean to the Pacific, passing through remote mining outposts, celebrated wine regions and dramatic mountain terrain, all framed by the ever-changing view from the Indian Pacific's windows.

Those with an artistic flair can visit the Pro Hart Gallery, where a 'paint and sip' experience awaits inside the late artist's original studio. If your interests lean toward food, consider joining Chef Lee Cecchin at Living Desert State Park for a hands-on session exploring native bush plants and spices, capped off with a lighthearted cooking challenge at The Old Salt Bush restaurant. Craving something more offbeat? Follow along with Shelita Buffet, self-proclaimed Queen of the Outback, on a lively and humorous walk down the main street.
